Life-Style Coach

What is a Life-Style Coach --

A lifestyle coach is a counselor who helps clients to clarify their goals, ambitions, weaknesses and future plans in the interest of helping them to live happier and more fulfilling lives. Lifestyle coaches may use a combination of exercises, role-playing, writing, conversation and speculation to help people get to know themselves better and become more able to achieve their goals.

Long-Term Thinking

One of the aspects of successful living that is promoted by most lifestyle coaches is long-term thinking. It's easy to get caught up in a busy life and to stop looking beyond tomorrow, or even this afternoon. While it's important to live in the moment, however, it's just as important to have some sense of the long-term arc of your life so you can be sure that you're progressing toward where you want to be. A lifestyle coach can offer an objective perspective and opinion about the direction a client is headed in, and help her to aim toward what she wants in the future.

Honesty

Most people have friends with whom they talk about personal issues to some extent. The problem is that many close friends don't want to be totally honest for fear that they will cause hurt feelings. A lifestyle coach is a counselor, not a friend, and is more able to tell a client something that he may not want to hear about himself. If a person is engaging in self-destructive behavior, sabotaging his own success, being excessively lazy or generally causing his own unhappiness, an effective lifestyle coach will point these failings out in a constructive way and help the client to move beyond these behaviors.

Optimism

A positive attitude can be a great help in living a productive life and in reaching goals. A person who is able to maintain an optimistic view of the world, without becoming unrealistic or detached from reality, will have more confidence in pursuing her goals. A lifestyle coach will emphasize the power and importance of attitude, and help clients to feel good about themselves and their lives. True optimism isn't about ignoring the bad things in life; it's about acknowledging one's own strengths and one's own ability to cope with and overcome the bad things.

Courage

Sometimes people become overwhelmed with difficulties, loss or fear. A lifestyle coach can serve as a shoulder to lean on, and sometimes to cry on, in a person's journey back to a place of strength. Taking control of your own life can be a scary experience, and guidance can sometimes make the difference between success and failure. Having an ally along the way can make a client realize the importance of being courageous in the face of adversity, and also make him more able to actualize a state of courage in his own being. Long-term thinking, honesty, optimism and courage exist in every person; the coach's job is to help clients to see these qualities that are already inside of them.
