New Businesses:It takes several years for a new business to grow significantly before most government agencies or well established companies will consider you a threat. Why? Because most new companies don't make it past the 3-5 year mark because they lack the ability to look, plan or forecast ahead. Established Businesses:It's easy to get used to "we've always done it this way" attitude instead of making things easier, more streamline, faster production with a new set of eyes. Population demands change every 3 years -- when was the last time you changed or reviewed your strategic plans? Company managers whether they run a new company or one that's been established for a while need to consider their company image (how it looks to others on the outside as well as how it looks to its employees). A company image is more than a logo, website, and company t-shirts. A company image is defined by the attitude by the people who work for you, your customers, your products, your business rating, and how you see your own company growing. What is a Strategic Plan? A Strategic Plan is similar to your Marketing and Financial Plans - it creates a road map of decisions that will lead your company in the direction that will best serve you and your customers! What else do I need besides a Strategic Plan? Every successful business, creates a vision, mission statement, goals (measurable objectives to meet those goals) and an overall Business Plan that covers their strategic, marketing and financial plans for the future. This is only the beginning - other documents would include, but not be exclusive to employee handbooks, operating instructions (overall company and individual office areas), financial proposals, grants, etc. The list can go on depending on the size and subject matter of your company. Why this matters? Companies that don't have a vision - a road map (GPS if you will) - a set of instructions (Strategic Plan), are doomed to go around in circles and not move forward and soon fail. A fine example of a vision and a strategic plan was and is the execution of Apple since the return of Steve Jobs in 1996 with the redesign of their products with their customers in mind. Every electronic company now is trying to 'catch-up' to their design and vision. What this should tell you is sometimes you have to think outside your box of normal thinking. Not only are you concerned for your company -- but you have to think about what our customer wants, when they want it, where they want it and how they want it. Through all of that -- what's the best way for you to provide that to them in the most economical way that best suits your company.
